Phoebe’s ears betrayed her by drooping slightly. All of the strange changes she’d been forced to endure slammed into the forefront of her mind. “I just got a job.” Not that she’d joined a group of Firebird hunters- she might as well say that she was trying to find Bigfoot.

“Where? How much does it suck?” Nicole’s own caracal ears were arguably more expressive with their generously tufted tips, but they remained upright as she continued her line of questioning.

“Just some research work,” Phoebe said. Not that her Firebird-hunting had gotten complicated by multiple serial killers. Not that one of those killers was inside her own body.

Nicole looked like she was about to ask another question but then she noticed Julia, who chose that moment to speak up. “Hey! I’m her roommate. Y’all can go catch up if you want. Don’t worry about us.”

Phoebe and Nicole looked at each other, silently questioning. Nicole nodded and Phoebe shrugged with a smile. “Sounds good.”

The pair paid for their cookies, and Phoebe said goodbye to everyone. Julia had since joined Kamari and Jade, who were perusing six different colors of gummy frogs. Once outside, she also waved to Yuli, who was dozing and enjoying the sun with their leash tied to a bike rack.

“Aww! Hi cute doggy,” Nicole said to them. “So, you want to get boba?”
