Each feather can grant any wish you make. This is the Firebird’s true power. Strength, wealth, beauty, love, and blood all pour from its plumage. When it has given all its feathers, its fledglings1 will gather before it, in accordance with its will. I don’t understand why- but I do suspect, to the disappointment of many young men seeking glory, that only a fledgeling is capable of capturing the whole creature. Great wars will be waged and won in the time of the Firebird. Surely, before it slumbers again, the world will be transformed.
Some may say that the Firebird is a type of fae- but this is not true! The old tales describe those who have been visited by the Firebird. They are not attacked or stolen. They return as changed people. Special people, for the Firebird has made the deepest desires in their hearts come true.
It is unknown when the Firebird will return to us. It has been nearly 900 years since it was last sighted. A new millennium looms, but still feels so far from me. I must say that the idea of dying before the Firebird awakens again pains me greatly.
1. The word “fledgling” to describe those who have taken Firebird feathers is a modern invention by the late Dr. Ivan Morevna (Morevna, 1994). It was included in this translation in order to remain consistent with modern publications concerning the Firebird.
